Treñas: Port modernization key to investment opportunities in WV

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas welcomes the inaugural operation of the Visayas Container Terminals (VCT) Mobile Harbor Cranes as part of the port’s modernization.

In his message delivered by Acting Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, Treñas said with the mobile harbor cranes, the local industries in the Western Visayas can be connected with national and international markets.

“This port modernization that we are currently witnessing will create more investment opportunities across the region. With VCT’s increased operational efficiency, greater cargo handling capacity, and enhanced connectivity, this will allow our businesses to meet the rising demand of our thriving local economy and bolster our competitiveness in national and international trade,” the city mayor said.

He noted that WV has immense potential in developing the export industry as discussed during the Exports Business Forum held in Iloilo City where the business community, and national and local governments gathered.

Moreover, the city mayor also cited lasting positive impact of the project to the lives of Ilonggos through the creation of new jobs. strengthening of industries, and the efficient flow of goods.

“We continue to play a significant role in exports development through meetings with various stakeholders,” he assured.

Treñas recalled that the modernization of the port facility started as a dream a few years back, with the vision of making Iloilo as a premier gateway for international trade and commerce of the region.

Its realization is a result of years of consultation with all provincial governments in the region, businesses, and national government agencies which started in 2022.

He thanked everyone, including former Senate President Franklin Drilon, who worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality.

Meanwhile, ICTSI Executive Vice President Christian R. Gonzalez said, the new cranes, the largest and most modern in Panay Island, represent their commitment to pursue a culture of efficiency and advancement.

“Beyond just the crane investment, this project typifies the power of public-private alliances to drive growth and upliftment. Our investments in the billions of pesos over the next 25 years will position Iloilo as a key driver of economic progress in the Philippines,” he stressed.

He emphasized that the fulfillment of the project was made possible by a shared vision, focus, and resolve of many partners and stakeholders.

“The Iloilo City Government, led by Mayor Jerry Treñas, provided a business-friendly environment and the encouragement and leadership to get this project done. Former Senator Frank Drilon was relentless in his support across multiple administrations,” he added. (Iloilo City PIO)
