Treñas hopes for expanded Uswag Scholarship in the next admin

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is confident that the Uswag Scholarship program will not only continue but will also expand further under the leadership of the city’s future officials, benefiting even more students.
The Uswag Scholarship is a pet project of Treñas, which started in 2010 when he was the congressman of the city.
Currently, the program has benefited 29,389 scholars, including around 2,000 active scholars.
“This must continue and even grow bigger to help more students,” said the mayor during a gathering of Uswag scholars last Friday night.
The event, themed Kabataan kag Kauswagan (Youth and Progress), was organized to recognize the dedication and hard work of the city’s Uswag scholars.
The celebration also served as a platform for some scholars to share their testimonies on how the program significantly helped their education.
A total of 419 Uswag scholars graduated with Latin honors: 293 as Cum Laude, 123 as Magna Cum Laude, and three as Summa Cum Laude.
Many of the scholars have become successful in their respective careers, with some now working as doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, and seafarers.
Mayor Treñas emphasized that aside from beautifying and developing the city, his administration is also focused on improving the lives of its residents, particularly the youth, by investing in programs and projects that provide significant benefits to them.
He also proudly mentioned that under his administration since 2019, the city has invested PHP 2 billion in building school facilities and other essential educational infrastructure to ensure a better and more comfortable learning environment for elementary and high school students.
The mayor believes that the strong support of the City Council, led by Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, has been crucial in the successful implementation of the city’s programs and projects. (Iloilo City PIO/GSTayona)
