Stakeholders look forward to modern, clean markets

The various stakeholders look forward to finally doing business back in the city’s two biggest markets, the Iloilo Central and Terminal markets.

During Mayor Jerry P. Treñas’ recent visit at the ongoing construction of the Central Market or Tienda Mayor, the vendors shared their anticipation for the market completion and excitement to return to the redeveloped facility.

Recently, the Iloilo Central Market Vendors Association came up with a collective statement strongly supporting the redevelopment of the market, with an appeal to fast-track the completion.

The association believes that the plan of SM Prime Holdings Inc., as partner of the city government in the redevelopment of the Central and the Iloilo Terminal Market, addresses their demand for clean, safe conducive and suitable space to do their business while ensuring cultural heritage preservation.

Likewise, the New Iloilo Terminal Market Vendors Association through a separate statement also expressed their support, emphasizing that the redevelopment will enhance the public’s access and enjoyment of both markets, creating a welcoming and vibrant community space for all.
Both markets are targeted to be completed by December 2024.

Various sectors including the barangays, business community and academe also support the market development initiative and its prompt completion.

Eatery owner Arlene Tamayo said buying goods at the markets especially when raining would be more conducive with modernized markets.
Meanwhile, Brgy. Flores, City Proper Punong Barangay Angelita Umadhay said the markets once completed will be attractive and presentable for tourists.

“Sa subong better kung mapa-ubra ang atun nga mga market kay mas hapos lang sa amon nga naga-paninda adlaw-adlaw parehas sakun naga-marketing kung mag-ulan, kabudlay gid ya kung magbaha, kabudlay gid samun kapin pa sa super asta gid taga-tuhod kay barado gid mga drainage mas mayo gid kung mapa-ubra, mahapos nalang, damo gid maka-avail, kag mas mayo gid kay mahapos na samun nga naga paninda, kag sa mga gakaladto bala nga mga taga-diin nga lugar makita nila ang development ni mayor,” (Once the market is redeveloped, it would be easier and conducive for marketgoers like us to go around and buy our daily needs. Unlike it’s original state, especially of the Terminal market, where the drainages were clogged resulting to flooding in some areas of the market. The modern market will also be an attraction for the city visitors where they can enjoy shopping for our native products and delicacies. It symbolizes the city government’s commitment to development under Mayor Treñas,”) said Umadhay.
