Iloilo City will be home to the biggest desalination plant in the country, a project that will provide a long-term solution to the growing demand for clean and reliable water in the metropolis.

Earlier today, local officials headed by Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas and Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. and the METROPAC Water Investments Corp. (Metro Pacific Water) headed by its Chairman, Manuel V. Pangilinan, led the groundbreaking ceremony of the 66.5-MLD Desalination Plant in Barangay Ingore, La Paz. The event was graced by DILG Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla.

The state-of-the-art desalination plant will use cutting-edge technology to convert seawater into potable water, securing an uninterrupted supply for approximately 50,000 households in Iloilo City.

According to the city mayor, Iloilo City is experiencing tremendous growth, with the local economy thriving, driven by key sectors such as the BPO industry and tourism, while the population continues to expand. With this growth come great challenges—particularly in ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for the communities.

“This desalination plant is part of our vision to address that challenge,” Treñas stressed.

The city mayor thanked Metro Pacific Water and other stakeholders for their support in bringing the project to life, providing not only water but also promoting the sustainability and safety of the Ilonggos.

“Investing in sustainable infrastructure like this desalination plant is essential, not only for meeting the needs of today but also for the future. This plant will ensure that as Iloilo City continues to grow, we can provide a consistent and dependable water supply for all residents,” he added.

He also noted that this move is the city’s contribution to Sustainable Development Goal No. 6, which calls for clean water and sanitation for all. (GSTayona/Iloilo City PIO)
