New Iloilo Central Market render

Last year’s scientific survey conducted by Random Access Consultants, Inc. (RACI) revealed that the majority of Ilonggos desire a modern public market, and this dream is now close to becoming a reality.

The public markets, particularly the two largest ones, Iloilo Central and Terminal markets, which are also historical and cultural landmarks in the city, are set to become world-class establishments that Ilonggos can be proud of and that will become tourist attraction.

The ongoing redevelopment of these markets is on track for completion by December of this year. With this, everyone looks forward to the opening of these modern, clean, and comfortable public markets.
For vendors like 58-year-old Ninfa Bunye, owner of Nienfel Dried Fish inside the Central market, known as “Tienda Mayor,” the upgrade is long overdue, as they the market vendors have endured years of inconvenience in the old and dilapidated market, especially when it rains.

Bunye emphasized that just as the public plaza underwent improvements, marketgoers and vendors deserve upgraded facilities as well.

The Iloilo Central Market stands as one of the city’s most popular and frequented places, where some of Iloilo’s bests can be found including agricultural products, crafts, and affordable goods. Tourists also visit the market to purchase dried fish, dried squid, and other local crafts as pasalubong.

SM Prime Holding (SMPH) and the Iloilo City Government partnered through a public-private partnership, are working together to revitalize the city’s largest markets, a commitment to preserving the city’s historical and cultural heritage.

The restoration project prioritizes the safety and well-being of vendors and visitors while maintaining the sites’ historical significance.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas himself also expressed excitement to the thriving future of the city’s public markets.

He recalled that for the longest time before he came back as city mayor, the markets were a losing proposition. They were losing money as an economic enterprise and had to borrow from the General Funds to pay for electricity, water, and other operational expenses, he shared.

Treñas believes that with improved facilities, the Ilonggos, including market vendors, will have better livelihood opportunities and be more competitive, more especially with capability development program for their enhancement and empowerment.

The city mayor said he is more excited to see the renovated markets – with a clean environment; clean rest rooms; proper zoning; parking slots in the roof deck; elevators for the customers; among others.

“We can eat batchoy and pancit molo in a clean environment; where we can drink our Madge coffee in a nicer place. We will even be prouder to be Ilonggos when the time comes,” he said.

SM Prime and the city government’s collaboration reflects both social responsibility and community service, with both parties working together to enhance the quality of life of the Ilonggos.

The restoration project highlights the importance of honoring the past while building a sustainable future, and the partnership showcases the positive impact that can be achieved when public and private sectors come together for the greater good of the whole Ilonggo community.
