Iloilo City Achieves Major Milestones in Spay, Neuter, and Anti-Rabies Campaigns
Iloilo City has made significant strides in promoting animal welfare and public health through its anti-rabies vaccination and Uswag Spay and Neuter programs. These efforts are part of the city’s vision of becoming a rabies-free community while addressing the stray animal population in a humane and sustainable way.
This year, the city’s anti-rabies vaccination campaign achieved remarkable results, vaccinating 38,236 dogs, representing 84.97% of the estimated 45,000 dog population. Vaccination efforts covered 179 out of 180 barangays, achieving a 99.44% barangay vaccination rate.
Mayor Jerry Treñas commended these efforts, emphasizing their importance in ensuring the safety of both residents and their pets. “Rabies is a preventable disease. By staying proactive, we protect not just our pets but also our families,” he said.
Uswag Spay and Neuter Program
The Uswag Spay and Neuter program exceeded expectations, sterilizing 577 pets—an impressive 262.27% accomplishment rate against the target of 220. This initiative aims to manage the stray animal population, prevent the spread of diseases, and improve the overall health of Iloilo City’s pet community.
Iloilo City Pound Updates
The Iloilo City Pound continues to promote responsible pet ownership. This year, 69 animals were impounded, while 73 pets were successfully adopted into loving homes. As of December 12, 2024, the pound’s inventory includes 33 dogs, ready for adoption by compassionate Ilonggos.
To further strengthen animal welfare initiatives, the city recently inaugurated animal welfare desks in barangays. These desks provide a platform for residents to raise concerns about animal welfare, promoting responsible pet ownership and care for animals in need.
Mayor Treñas expressed his gratitude to the city government, barangays, volunteers, and residents who contributed to these milestones.
“These accomplishments highlight the collective efforts of our community. I encourage all pet owners to update their pets’ vaccinations regularly and continue supporting our programs to build a compassionate community for both humans and animals,” he added.
Iloilo City remains dedicated to prioritizing animal welfare and public health, ensuring a safe and compassionate environment for all.
